This little Kappa girl just wants to be a pretty lolita. Is that so wrong? Sure, she’s a horrible monster that loves eating buttholes second only to cucumbers*, but that doesn’t mean she can’t be pretty, damn it!
I’m doing a series of little watercolour paintings of water monster kids! I’m excited! Its nice to feel excited about making some art again (◡‿◡✿)
*Kappa really, really love eating buttholes. Mythology is so wacky!
The other day I was thinking about when I was 16 and started making my first “serious” comics with ink on bristol board and thumbnails and lettering guides and everything…
Anyways! I did some of those early comics about these monster kid characters, and I was feeling nostalgic and started doodling them again, and then Photoshop and the pencil tool happened? And here we are.
So on the left is Saēna, a great x? granddaughter of the Simurgh* and on the right is Jocasta the Sphinx. I had fun drawing them again and giving their character designs a bit of an update—mostly looking to actual species of birds for inspiration for their wings (the polyplectron genus and the hoopoe, respectively).
I think these characters still have potential, maybe I should make more comics about them and their other monster friends in the future? Or maybe they are really awful characters and I am a terrible judge of their merit because they are my babies????
*if you understand this, congrats, you’re a mythology nerd too!
Hella crappy Photobooth pictures of the mask for my Halloween costume this year. I’m going as a Kitsune (supernatural shape-shifting fox spirit from Japan). You can’t really see it but the paints on the mask are all pearlescent or iridescent so it’s all sparkly and fancy. I made the mask out of papier-maché last year but didn’t get a chance to wear it, so I’m excited. I’ve also got a tail (may make more) and some supplies to make some vaguely-kanzashi-ish hairclips once I figure out the color scheme for the rest of the outfit.
Of course I don’t actually have any clothes to wear with the costume! I can’t afford a real kimono, don’t have time/a sewing machine to make my own, and all the “kimono” or “geisha” costumes I’ve encountered at Halloween stores so far are super skimpy and embarrassingly inaccurate. I hope I can find either a premade costume or a plain vaguely-kimono-looking robe I can modify into something workable, if strange.
Also FIRST HALLOWEEN WHERE I CAN LEGALLY DRINK HELLS YES.
